When it's over, I want to say: all my life I was a bride married to amazement.

— Mary Oliver

Welcome. My name is Adelheid Fischer. I am an educator and literary nonfiction writer who focuses on natural history, ecology and the intersections of nature and culture.

The goal of my work is to follow wonder and curiosity into the field—into forests and tundra, oceans and deserts, prairies and lakes—and to share my findings with readers and students. I have given voice to a Noah’s Ark of organisms including giant waterbugs, soil mites, chorus frogs, butterworts, star-nosed moles, dung beetles, carrier-shell snails and teddy-bear chollas.

Through my teaching, I explore how the lifeways of plants and animals like these can inspire sustainable innovation in a wide range of human activities: how we build cities, for example, design products or manage forests.

But I’m also interested in nature’s tangible intangibles: how they can provide guidance for living a good life, help foster well-being or restore a sense of magnificence to our lives.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about my journey. And while you’re here, please relay some of your own exciting nature discoveries. You can reach me by clicking the button below.
