In 2018, I cofounded NatureMaker with the ASU Library. NatureMaker is an active learning library where hands-on explorations of natural history artifacts inspire sustainable innovation in fields ranging from architecture and design to business and engineering. The project won ASU’s 2021 President’s Award for Innovation.

NatureMaker

The NatureMaker Space

The hands-on NatureMaker learning library offers visitors a wide variety of tools for observing nature up close, and discovering innovative solutions to sustainability challenges in a wide variety of disciplines. It includes:

  • Hundreds of natural history artifacts ranging from feathers, shells and skeletons to insects, dried plants and seeds.

  • An array of tools for visualizing natural phenomena, including microscopes, 3-D scanners, binoculars, field kits and magnifying lenses.

  • A collection of books that are useful in the study of biomimicry including volumes on such topics as biomechanics, natural history and up-close photography of objects drawn from nature.

It’s a joyful place to walk into. There’s so much to look at and there’s so much to learn.
